When to Schedule Maternity Photos

The complete guide to timing your session perfectly.

The Sweet Spot: 28-34 Weeks

After photographing hundreds of expecting mothers, I've found the ideal window for maternity portraits is between 28 and 34 weeks pregnant.

Why This Window Works

  • Your bump is beautifully visible - Nicely rounded and photographically defined
  • You're still comfortable - Easier to move, pose, and stand for the session
  • Energy levels are usually good - Before the third trimester exhaustion kicks in
  • Less swelling - Feet and hands are typically less puffy
  • Safety buffer - Plenty of time before your due date

Week-by-Week Breakdown

20-27 Weeks

Too early for most. Your bump may not be prominent enough for dramatic silhouettes. However, this can work if you're carrying multiples or showing early.

Best for: Twin/multiple pregnancies, second+ pregnancies showing early

28-32 Weeks

The sweet spot. Beautiful, defined bump. Maximum comfort and mobility. This is when I recommend scheduling for most clients.

Best for: First-time moms, outdoor/beach sessions, sessions requiring more movement

33-36 Weeks

Still works well. Fuller bump, dramatic look. You may tire more easily, so we pace the session accordingly. Studio sessions work great at this stage.

Best for: Moms wanting a more dramatic bump, studio sessions, shorter sessions

37+ Weeks

Cutting it close. We can absolutely photograph this late, but there's risk of baby arriving before your session. We'll need flexibility on timing.

Best for: Last-minute bookings, moms who missed their window

Best Seasons in Hampton Roads

Our Virginia weather affects outdoor session planning. Here's what to expect:

Spring (March-May)

Excellent choice. Mild temperatures, blooming flowers at Norfolk Botanical Garden, azaleas everywhere. Cherry blossoms in April are stunning. Watch for pollen allergies and occasional rain.

Summer (June-August)

Hot but beautiful. Gorgeous golden hour light, lush greenery, beach sessions at their best. We schedule early morning or evening sessions to avoid the heat. Humidity can be intense-stay hydrated!

Fall (September-November)

The favorite. Most requested season. Perfect temperatures, gorgeous fall foliage (peak mid-October to early November), incredible golden hour light. Book early-this season fills fast!

Winter (December-February)

Underrated. Dramatic bare branches, moody skies, no crowds at locations. Studio sessions are perfect. Outdoor sessions require layers between shots but can be stunning.

Booking Timeline

  • Second Trimester (14-20 weeks):
Reach out to inquire and get on my calendar. This gives you first choice of dates.
  • 1-2 Months Before Session:
Book your session date. Weekend sessions fill 4-6 weeks out, especially in fall.
  • 2 Weeks Before:
Pre-session consultation to discuss wardrobe, location, and vision.
  • Session Day:
Your maternity session at 28-34 weeks!

Pro Tip: Due Date Calculator

Not sure when to book? Take your due date and count back 6-10 weeks. That's your ideal session window. Example: Due April 15? Schedule for late February to mid-March.

What If Plans Change?

Early Labor or Complications

If you go into early labor or have pregnancy complications that prevent your session, we'll work with you. Options include:

  • Reschedule to a hospital or home session if medically appropriate
  • Convert your maternity session into a newborn session
  • Full credit toward future sessions

Your health and baby always come first.

Weather Issues

For outdoor sessions, we monitor weather closely. If conditions look poor, we'll contact you 24-48 hours ahead with options:

  • Reschedule to the next available date (no fee)
  • Move to studio session instead
  • Push through light rain/clouds (often creates beautiful, moody images!)
